Professor Hanley taught at the City University of New York before coming to San Francisco State in 2008. He has published numerous articles on twentieth-century American working-class literature, pedagogy, and the contemporary politics of higher education in the United States. His essay, "Mashing up the Institution: Teacher as Bricoleur," can be found here. His current book project, Proletarian Monsters, focuses on figures of labor in modern American popular and literary cultures. He teaches courses on cultural studies, the literature of labor, and modern American literature.
