Scholarships

Provides an award up to $500 in memory of Amy Love, longtime educator and student/community advocate, to freshman and sophomore students in any major. Applicants must show that they have contributed to the public good through community service learning (CSL) classes or other work/activism in their communities.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 2.5; a minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester. The applicant must demonstrate contribution to the public good by engaging in community involvement through (either community service learning classes or other work in the community).   

Requirements:

• One letter of recommendation from a SF State faculty member or community service partner/supervisor, attesting to your strengths and your contribution to the public good.
• Unofficial SFSU transcript
• Personal Statement (150 words)
• Statement of Community Service/Activism (150 words)

Provides an award of up to $1,000 to a graduate or undergraduate student in any degree or certificate program in the Department of English at SF State.

Eligibility: A minimum enrollment of 3 units in award semester. The recipient must demonstrate service and commitment to the African American community, and an interest in women’s issues, African American literature or African American women.

Requirements:

• 1-2 page (double spaced) statement in which you:
  • describe your service and commitment to the African American community
  • describe your interest in women's issues, African American literature, or African American women
  • address your financial need
• Copy of unofficial SF State transcript.

Provides an award of up to $1,500 to a San Francisco State student interested in literature based on queer/gay/lesbian/bisexual/transsexual perspectives.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 3.0; minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• 1-2 page (double-spaced) statement addressing your interest in literature based on queer/gay/lesbian/bisexual/transsexual perspectives (please also address financial need).

This scholarship provides an award of up to $1,000 to a declared undergraduate English Literature student.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 3.0; a minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• 1-2 page (double-spaced) statement about your intellectual interests and accomplishments.
• Provide 2 faculty names and contact information for 2 reference letters.

This scholarship provides an award of up to $4,000 to a declared undergraduate English Literature student. To award a scholarship in honor of our eminent faculty member, Professor Michael Krasny, to an undergraduate student who demonstrates a record of excellence in our English Literature program. The awardee must have a commitment to serving an ambassadorial role for the English major at department events or participation in other outreach projects for the major.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 3.3; a minimum enrollment of 12 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• A 500-word statement on the applicant's interests in literature, its place in the public humanities, and the role our department has played in fostering these interests
• Provide one faculty name and contact information for a reference letter.

• A commitment to serving an ambassadorial role for the English major at department events or participation in other outreach projects for the major, addressed in the above statement

To award a scholarship in memory of Emeritus Professor Stephen Arkin to undergraduate students who are deeply engaged in literary study and aspire to contribute to the public good, and wish to use their SF State education to further those goals. Students must be enrolled in one of the four undergraduate major concentrations offered by the English Department. Amount of award varies.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 2.5; minimum enrollment of 12 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• Personal Statement: Essay in 500 words or less for the following:

a) What specific barriers have you overcome to achieve academic success, and how do you plan to use your SF State education to contribute to the collective “public good”?

b) What work beyond the classroom connected to your English major have you engaged in as an undergraduate student at SF State (e.g. teaching, tutoring, community service learning, mentorship experiences, undergraduate research showcases, conferences, student publications, digital humanities projects, archival research, online writing of any kind, community or online performances)?

c) How has your life experience influenced your contributions to the classroom, the Department of English, and/or the campus community here at SF State?

To award a scholarship of up to $1000 in memory of Vicente Narciso Marcelo to BA students enrolled in one of the four undergraduate major concentrations: (Professional Writing and Rhetoric, English Education, Linguistics, or Literature). The scholarship was established by SF State alumna, Karim Salgado (Criminal Justice major) in honor of her grandfather, Vicente Narciso Marcelo.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 3.0; minimum enrollment of 9 units in award semester.

Personal Statement: Essay in 250 words or less for the following:

Our donor, Mr. Vincent Narciso Marcelo, loved reading and talking about literature; he also passionately believed that learning opens new doors. In that spirit, please share your ideas and experiences from your perspective as an English major. You can choose one of the following questions to answer:

a) How has your experience as an English Major helped you see the world differently or opened a door for you?

b) Think about one of the classes you’ve taken as an English major. How did the class content and experience change the way you think about the English language, English literature, or the ways we communicate via writing?

Provides scholarship for up to $1000 for a graduate student pursuing the study of English Literature, including American Literature.

Eligibility: 3.0 minimum GPA for entering students. 3.5 minimum GPA for current students. Financial need. May be awarded to previous award recipients. Minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester.

The Gail E. Weinstein Fellowship in Community Literacy Education provides an award of up to $1,000 to support a student in the graduate TESOL program who demonstrates outstanding potential and initiative as a community literacy practitioner and community partner. This fellowship, which reflects the TESOL program’s commitment to community service and learner-centered practice, honors Dr. Gail Weinstein, beloved professor, mentor, and friend to so many at SF State and the larger world of adult literacy education.

This fellowship encourages graduate TESOL students to use their passion and talent to enhance or create successful community partnerships, a primary mission of the Center for Immigrant & Refugee Community Literacy Education (CIRCLE), established by Dr. Weinstein in 2007. CIRCLE aims to strengthen immigrant families and communities, to support practitioners who serve them, and to engage students deeply in the fabric of their communities with experiences that build their professional and leadership skills.

Eligibility: A minimum 3.0 GPA; minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester (see details of requirements below).

Requirements:

• A 1-2 page (double-spaced) statement of purpose which describes your experiences and interests in community literacy education, as well as the ways this award will advance your professional growth as a community literacy practitioner. For this year’s award, we are particularly interested in reviewing applications from students with interests in strengthening the integration of Project SHINE into the local community and our TESOL program.
• A copy of your most recent unofficial SF State transcript.
• A brief statement of financial need.

Provides scholarship for up to $4000 for a graduate student pursuing the study of MA English TESOL. Applicant must be an incoming or current student in the MA TESOL program. Must bring broad cultural competency to the MA TESOL program. Must have self-reported financial need.

In addition to the monetary award, the recipient will receive mentoring and career guidance toward the completion of the MA English TESOL degree.

Eligibility: 3.0 minimum GPA for entering students and current students. Financial need. Minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• Statement of purpose describing any work or life experiences you believe are assets/strengths in your future career as a practitioner or leader in the TESOL field. Also, please describe your financial need.

Provides an award of up to $1,000 to a graduate student in the Literature program who is interested in the study of Shakespeare and/or Renaissance literature.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 3.0; minimum enrollment of 6 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• 1-2 page (double-spaced) statement describing your interest in Shakespeare studies or the study of English Renaissance Literature (please also address financial need).

Provides an award of up to $500 to a graduate student pursuing the M.A. in English Literature who has demonstrated excellence in literary study.

Eligibility: A minimum GPA of 3.0; completion of at least 9 units of graduate study; and enrollment in at least 3 units in award semester.

Requirements:

• 1-2 page (double spaced) statement of academic and research goals and of financial need.

• at least one letter of recommendation/support from a member of the Literature faculty.

Eligibility: Provides up to four graduate students in the TESOL Program with at least $500 for the purpose of attending the annual TESOL Convention. Awarded in time for travel (late February/early March). Applicants must be enrolled in the M.A. TESOL program in award semester.

Requirements:

• A statement (two pages, typed, double-spaced) explaining why you wish to attend the Convention (how attendance will benefit you and others).
• A brief statement explaining your financial need, including information about any financial aid you currently receive.

The TESOL Legacy Fellowship supports the studies of one or more M.A. TESOL graduate students each year in order to facilitate the mentoring and professional growth of emerging professionals in the field. The award is given to continuing M.A. TESOL students and/or new students entering the program in fall semester who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to and involvement with the Program or show exceptional promise to make important contributions to the field of TESOL in the future.

Eligibility: A minimum 3.0 GPA; minimum enrollment of 6 units in each semester of the school year of the award (see details of requirements below).

Award: Up to $4,000
